The Mexican flag holds a lot of symbolism. The green bar represents hope, the white unity, and the red the blood of national heroes. At the center of the flag is the Mexican coat of arms. It is an artistic representation of a legend that tells how the Aztecs, a native people of Mexico, chose the location of their capital city.

The legend is as follows: the leader of the Aztecs, "whose name was Tenoch, was informed in a dream by the god of war, Huitzilopochtli, that they were to settle in the place where they would find an eagle on a prickly pear cactus eating a serpent. The place where they saw this sight was quite inhospitable — a swampy area in the center of three lakes, but this is where they settled and built the great city of Tenochtitlan."

As is the case in most countries, the Mexican flag waves above government buildings, public spaces, and private residences. Citizens may display the flag on their vehicles, homes, or clothing as a display of national pride. Flag Day is held on February 24 in Mexico. On that day, civic ceremonies and celebrations are held to honor the flag.
